SMILE

New to the SMILE program, Touch Math!!!

Why use Touch Math?

For students with special needs and autism, learning the value of a numeral through traditional classroom methods can be nearly impossible. These students may be able to count objects or repeat the names of numerals, but they have immense difficulty relating the value of a numeral (five carrots, beads or buttons) to the numeral itself (5). Until these deeper connections have been made, children with autism may not be able to think about a number in the abstract at all. Compared with traditional teaching methods, the TouchMath multisensory approach makes basic number/numeral comprehension much easier for children with autism. Using TouchPoints, students practice their new skills in researched, sequential steps. This way, students with autism develop a true understanding of numbers and their values, and can add, subtract, multiply and divide with far greater ease. TouchMath helps math come alive for these special kids.

Multisensory Approach

TouchMath integrates visual cues into our a one-step-at-a-time approach, ensuring that each skill is easily mastered before introducing the next skill. When the multisensory approach is punctuated with visual cues, negative habits such as reversals and guessing are effectively avoided. Students remain optimistic and self-confident as they assimilate new information. High self-esteem encourages the development of more complex math skills later.

Child-Friendly

Finally, TouchMath provides uncluttered, child-friendly pages. The large print, plentiful workspaces, and manageable number of problems on each page make math seem welcoming and fun, not complex and overwhelming.

By incorporating the Touch Math system into the SMIlE program, children will learn basic math and counting skills to prepare them for Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten skills.
